Our Story

A family legacy built on craftsmanship, integrity, and a deep respect for fine handmade rugs.

Rooted in Rugs Since the 1980s

Velvet Knot is a family-owned rug cleaning and repair service built on decades of hands-on experience with fine handmade rugs—everything from identification and materials to long-term care and preservation.

Our family’s rug business began in the 1980s with a rug store in Rancho Cucamonga, followed by a second location in Redlands. Over the years, the business grew and later consolidated operations in Palm Springs, earning a reputation for quality, craftsmanship, and honest guidance.

From Gallery Expertise to Dedicated Care

In 2001, under continued family leadership, the business evolved into Shiraz Rug Gallery, known for exceptional Persian, Oriental, and other handmade rugs. That experience—international sourcing, construction knowledge, and fiber and dye expertise—supports our cleaning and restoration work today.

Today, Velvet Knot is based in Redlands, California and focuses on cleaning, repair, and restoration rather than retail rug sales. Every recommendation is based on what is best for your rug’s condition, longevity, and value.

Integrity • Quality • Respect

What We Stand For

Rugs are more than décor—they can be investments, family pieces, and heirlooms. Our job is to protect the beauty, structure, and value of your rug using the safest process for its fibers and dyes.

Specialized & Gentle

We tailor the process to fiber type, dye stability, age, and condition—especially for hand-knotted wool and silk rugs.

Transparent & Honest

We explain what your rug needs after inspection and dye testing—no pressure, no unnecessary upsells, just appropriate care.

Local & Reliable

Based in Redlands and serving the Inland Empire with insured handling and consistent, professional rug care.

Quick Trust Checklist

Dye testing before washing • Fiber-safe methods • Controlled drying • Hand-knotted specialists • Insured handling • Pickup & delivery available

What to Expect

A simple, professional process so you always know what is happening with your rug.

1) Inspect & Dye Test

We identify fibers and construction, test dyes for stability, and note wear, odors, stains, or prior damage.

2) Deep Dust Removal

Dry soil can act like sandpaper. Removing it before washing helps protect the rug’s pile and foundation.

3) Wash, Rinse & Controlled Dry

We use fiber-safe cleaning, thorough rinsing, and controlled drying to reduce residue, odors, browning, and the risk of dye migration.

Finishing Touches

After drying, we groom the pile, verify the results, and make recommendations if repair or restoration could help extend the rug’s life.

Pickup & Delivery

Pickup and delivery are available throughout our service area. Free pickup & delivery for rugs 6×9 and larger (minimums may apply).

Hand-Knotted Rugs • Gentle Care

Why Gentle, Fiber-Safe Cleaning Matters

Hand-knotted rugs are delicate works of art made with natural fibers and dyes . Standard carpet cleaning can use hot steam, high heat, or pressure that may strip natural oils, make fibers brittle, cause colors to fade or bleed, and shorten the life of a fine rug.

  • No steam cleaning. We avoid high heat and pressure that can damage wool and silk.
  • No harsh chemicals. We use mild, non-bleaching products selected for the rug’s fiber and dye stability.
  • Controlled drying. Proper drying helps maintain shape, reduce odor, and protect the rug’s foundation and fringes.

Trust your rugs to experienced care designed to protect their beauty, softness, structure, and long-term value.
