Our Story
A family legacy built on craftsmanship, integrity, and a deep respect for fine handmade rugs.
Rooted in Rugs Since the 1980s
Velvet Knot is a family-owned rug cleaning and repair service built on decades of hands-on experience with fine handmade rugs—everything from identification and materials to long-term care and preservation.
Our story began in the 1980s with a rug store in Rancho Cucamonga, followed by a second location in Redlands. Over the years, the business grew and eventually consolidated operations in Palm Springs, earning a reputation for quality, craftsmanship, and honest guidance.
From Gallery Expertise to Dedicated Care
In 2001, under continued family leadership, the business evolved into Shiraz Rug Gallery, known for exceptional Persian, Oriental, and other handmade rugs. That experience—international sourcing, construction knowledge, and fiber/dye expertise—now supports our cleaning and restoration work every day.
Today, Velvet Knot is a dedicated operation focused on cleaning, repair, and restoration (not retail sales), so every recommendation is based on what’s best for your rug’s condition, longevity, and value.

What to Expect
A simple, professional process—so you always know what’s happening with your rug.
1) Inspect & Dye Test
We identify fibers and construction, test dyes for stability, and note any wear, odors, or prior damage.
2) Deep Dust Removal
Dry soil acts like sandpaper. Removing it first helps protect the pile and foundation during washing.
3) Wash, Rinse & Controlled Dry
We use fiber-safe cleaning, thorough rinsing, and controlled drying to reduce residue, odors, and risk of browning or dye bleed.
Finishing Touches
After drying, we groom the pile, verify results, and make recommendations if repairs or restoration would help extend the rug’s life.
Pickup & Delivery
Pickup and delivery are available throughout our service area. Free pickup & delivery for rugs 6×9 and larger (minimums may apply).

Why Gentle, Fiber-Safe Cleaning Matters
Hand-knotted rugs are delicate works of art made with natural fibers and dyes. Standard carpet cleaning often uses hot steam (high heat + pressure), which can strip natural oils, make fibers brittle, cause colors to fade or bleed, and shorten your rug’s life.
- No steam cleaning. We avoid high heat and pressure that can damage wool and silk.
- No harsh chemicals. We use mild, non-bleaching products that are fiber-safe.
- Controlled drying. Helps maintain shape, reduce odor, and protect foundations and fringes.
Trust your treasures to expert care—the safe way to protect value, softness, and long-term beauty.
About Us FAQ
Quick answers to the most common questions customers ask before trusting us with their rug.
Do you only work on handmade rugs?
We specialize in handmade rugs (including wool, silk, Persian, and Oriental), but we also clean modern and high-traffic rugs. We tailor the process to the rug’s construction and fiber type.
Do you dye test before cleaning?
Yes. Dye testing helps us choose the safest method and reduce the risk of color bleeding—especially important for wool and silk rugs.
Are you a retail rug store?
No. Velvet Knot is focused solely on cleaning, repair, and restoration—so recommendations are based on what your rug needs, not sales.
Do you offer pickup & delivery?
Yes. Pickup and delivery are available throughout our service area. Free pickup and delivery for rugs 6×9 and larger (minimums may apply).
